So. . . what IS reading?
- Is it the ability to read a single word on a page?
- Is it the ability to read every single word on a page?
- Is itย the ability to retell a story?
- Is itย the ability to read fluently, to sound natural while reading?
- Is it the ability to understand what is being read?
- Is reading the ability to correctly answer multiple choice questions about a story or text?
Reading seems to be something different to everyone–especially ourย little guys who are just now acquiring those all-too important literacy skills.ย
For some, reading is being able to pick out his or her name in the class list; for others, reading is being able to decode that very first leveled book.ย For others yet, reading is walking through that very first chapter book–solo.
But whether it’s plowing through a chapter book or paging through a magazine, many people active in the world of reading agree that reading IS indeed something important.
Head on over to the Melissa & Doug blog to read a recent post I wrote: What IS reading? and let me know what you think!
I enjoyed the post over on the Melissa & Doug blog. Great job!
thanks, Brandy!! Miss you–how are you and your sweet ones??!
We’re doing awesome! School has been so much fun…I can’t believe the school year is almost gone! And we are in the process of buying a house and selling our own. So we have been very busy. Not to mention, 3 dance classes, baseball for two boys (3-4 practices each boy each week…sheesh…they’re 3 and 5 years old), book clubs, birthday parties, gymnastics, and all the other normal day to day stuff. And my husband and I are also in the process of getting ready to each teach our own Bible classes at church this next quarter. I’m teaching the toddlers and he’s got the 4-5 year olds. Plus, we took the undertaking of decorating the six bulletin boards in the hall at church…this doesn’t include the two in each of our classrooms. Finally, and I’m not sure why we added this onto our plate, we’re training to run a 5k with the kids. Our friend (www.caseyscause.org) lost her daughter a few years ago to ITP and she hosts a run each year. We do the fun run every year, but two of our kids wanted to do the 5k and try to win their age division. So, we said okay. Whew! I can’t wait for the summer when we can all just chill out in our new home…who am I kidding…then we’ll have swimming, library summer reading program, playdates, and more. Sigh! LOL! Of course, that’s all fun fun fun stuff so it never feels tiring.
Even though I haven’t commented much, I’ve been reading each of your blog posts and we teach email newsletters! You’re one of my favorites online!
