Many thanks for the enthusiastic response to this giveaway.
The contest is now closed, and random.org #105 was chosen, notified, and confirmed.
Congratulations, Laura in Illinois!
When I learned about the Target Read With Me program and Target’s overall commitment to education, I was floored. Sure, I’ve always been a big fan of Target, but I’m a bigger fan of literacy and education; putting the two together is a serious win-win, and it makes me love the company that much more.
And when they decided to kick off the campaign by giving one lucky teach mama reader his or her very own iPad and a just-for-your family selection of children’s books, valued at over $599? I had to jump on board.
Target is launching the Read With Me program, a campaign designed to get every child reading by third grade so that students can make the important transition from learning to read to reading to learn. And Target’s also pledged to donate $500 million to support education–doubling its support to date–for a total of more than $1 billion dollars. Wow.
So what can you do to support the Target Read With Me Program? You can:
- Commit to a regular reading schedule with your kiddos: Before rest time (or nap time) and before bed are great places to start. Add some newspaper reading during breakfast (and there’s your non-fiction piece!), and you’re good to go!
Reading aloud with your kids has big pay-offs in the long run.
- Make reading a family event: If everyone sits down after dinner to read together, reading will become an exciting, natural part of the day. Read anything–books, magazines, the instructions to a new game–it doesn’t matter.
- Keep a book in your bag: Keeping a book–or two or three–in your purse or diaper bag will give you a few (hopefully more) minutes of sanity when you find yourself stuck at the mechanic’s, in a long line a the grocery store, or waiting in the school pick-up line.
- Talk about what you read: Reading is one thing but talking about the characters, the setting, the events, and the ideas takes it to the next level. It’s easier than you think and the payoff is big!
- Hit the library: Make it a weekly ritual to hit the library for new books. Choose a different theme each week (animals, games, countries, sports, etc) to mix up your selections, or try out a new library every once in a while if you can.
The library is a super place for finding books on new topics, of different genres, and about new places.
- Take the Pledge: Pledge to read with the children in your life. And when you take the Pledge, Target will donate up to 1 million books to children in need. So fab.
- Look for books: Target assembled a great list of Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Newberry Award-winners and more, and they even have lists broken down by age group. It’s worth checking out.
- Try out the resources: Word searches, word scrabbles, games, and more will continue the learning for our little ones. (I love these, and I’m totally using these during homework time!)
One of the simplest ways of motivating children to read–at all levels–is to read to them–to read a rich and varied mix of fiction, non-fiction, stories, articles, and poems. Pat Cunningham cites two different studies in “If they don’t read much, how they ever gonna get good?” (The Reading Teacher, September 2005) where students said that what most motivated them to read was their teacher reading to them.
As parents, we can help support our children’s literacy growth every single day by reading aloud to them. Not only does reading aloud demonstrate to them how fluent reading should sound, but it is relaxing, it provides great conversation starters, and it is a super excuse for extra cuddling with your kiddos on the couch.

This contest ends on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at midnight ET and is open to US residents only.
This sweepstakes is only open to U.S. residents 18 years or older. A winning commenter will be drawn at random, using Random.org, after the sweepstakes closes on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 12:00am EST. The winner will receive a 16GB Wi-Fi enabled iPad and a selection of children’s books, a prize package valued up to $599. After the winner is notified, he or she has 48 hours to respond with their mailing address, phone number and ages of their children, so that Target can ship the prize and select books appropriate for their children. If the winner does not reply in that time frame, he or she forfeits the prize and another winner will be drawn at random. Please note that we cannot ship product to a P.O. Box.
fyi: Target has generously provided me compensation for writing this post and for sharing information about this campaign, but the ideas and opinions expressed here are all my own. Target has also agreed to provide one teach mama reader with the above mentioned prize.

I look at books and read to my 3 1/2 year old son at several points throughout the day but my absolute favorite time is bedtime!! My son gathers up all the books he wants to look at, gets his “nuggin” (favorite blankie), and little “props” that go with the books (dinosaurs if it’s a dino book, bugs, trains, etc.) and we snuggle up under big piles of blankets and read together!! It’s such a sweet time!!
Stimey
My favorite children’s books are Jenny and the Cat Club and The Phantom Tollbooth. And Richard Scarry. And Dr. Seuss. You know, there are a lot of good children’s books out there. I like to read with my kids before bed.

Reading is just a natural part of our family life. The Tooth Fairy brings a little cash, and a beautiful hard-bound bookstore quality book with an inscription with each visit. Santa brings at least one book or set of books to each child, and Grandma brings books when she comes to visit. We LOVE books! 🙂

We read together each and every night. We usually take turns: my six-year-old will read one book, and then I will read one book. I love the books where it’s a shared read. They’re designed so the parent reads one page with a lot more text and the child reads one page with a little text. What a great way to read together!!! 😉

My favorite time to read with my 2-year-old son is when he stops me mid-activity with a book in hand. We love snuggling in bed reading at night, but I think those times when he spontaneously walks away from his blocks or tea party and says “Mama read this” are the very best because they truly show his love for books. His teacher at daycare is amazed at his attention span for stories… she says he can sit still looking at books longer than she can!

I have 3 1/2 year old twins and we read together at least twice a day (before nap and before bedtime). They love picking out which books we read and I let them pick out a different number of books each time so it is varied and they also work on counting. We snuggle up on our couch. They are almost getting too big to both fit on my lap. I am looking into a sectional couch so we can all cuddle into the turn of it. Reading with them is one of my favorite activities. They enjoy it so much and it really helps with the transition to sleep time.

We love to “wead” as my ninteen month old Lily says……. She is the light of my life and I have been reading to her since she was still in my tummy…..We read everday. most of the time we snuggle in the bed and have many different books to choose from…… She does have her favorites but she will even pick a magizine or one of her dads music books and sit in the floor and read to herself in her on little baby laguage……
Books are very important in this family and we would be very thankful to win this contest, but good luck to everyone, all children deserve the gift of snuggling with mommy or daddy and “weading”…… Thanks so much, Serena and Lily Northcutt

my fave time and place to read is late afternoon on a Saturday, with a cup of tea, and my girls curled up around me. Each of us reading our own books…now that they are into chapter books. Love it!

I love this idea – sharing ideas about children’s books. I spent my whole childhood with my nose buried in a book (okay – sometimes I played outside too) – and I SO enjoy reading my old favorites to my own kids. I still have several old Dr. Seuss books and I can recite One Fish, Two Fish from beginning to end.
Rachee
My daughter is ten but each night I read a chapter with her in whatever book she is reading. She has revisted The Westing Game and is now reading Rick Riordan (well, anything by him!). When she was a kid she loved, loved, loved I Love You Stinky Face.
BTW: love the ideas on your blog. May have to liberally borrow some for my storytimes!

My daughter is just turning five and my favorite childrens’ book to read with her is That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown. We read 2 or 3 books before nap every day and 2 or 3 books before bedtime at night. I love those moments together, but my favorites now, are when she spontaneously brings me a book and asks to sit down and read it when it’s not even designated “reading time.”

P.S. Thanks so much for the chance to enter!! Our daughter has multiple medical special needs that require many long car trips to specialists far away, frequent medical procedures & hospital stays, and ALWAYS long waits in doctor’s offices. We’re currently saving for an iPad for her in order to have something easily transportable that can hold many books, educational apps and some fun games to keep her occupied. Winning one would be an amazing help. This is a wonderful thing that you and Target are doing.
Thanks again!
Chris B.
My son and I love Mo Willems’ Elephant & Piggie series. 🙂 I appreciate that they’re humorous as well as being easy to read for the beginning reader.

We read before bed and after we do calendar every day. The favorite book around our house right now is any of the “Froggy” books. My boys love quoting the book and say, “FROOOOOOGGGGGGY” and then the other says, “WHAAAAAAAATTTT?” just like in the stories! Thanks Target for supporting early literacy!!!

Always before bedtime since it always helps calm my son (22 mths) down from a busy day. I let him pick the books and the fun part now is having him tell me the story by describing items in the pictures.

We have a definite love for books in our family, and the younger kids and I read picture books together every day just before naptime and again before bedtime, but there are lots of spontaneous readings that occur every day! We homeschool, so we read off and on throughout the day, plus nightly bedtime stories. My son is a verly early riser and likes to curl up and read Harry Potter before anyone else wakes up. My favorite part of the day is when i snuggle up with my two boys in bed and read at least 4 books to them – we do this every night. I’ve done it since they were born. My big guy loves all types of books, but has been gravitating towards science books / space books. My little guy loves the Llama Llama series. He was having a hard time at school and the Llama Llama Misses Mama book really helped. He’s only three and whenever we read it he gets tearied eyed – he truely understands the book.

With one child in full day preschool and another in 2nd grade, we find our best reading opportunities to be included in our bedtime routine during the week. When work and school cease for holidays, weekends or snowdays (like today) we enjoy reading throughout. I truly credit my childrens’ success in school to the commitment we have to reading. Thanks for the great post, Amy!

My favorite time to read with my child (actually my favorite time to spend with my child) is right before bedtime. We’re comfy and cozy and cuddled up next to each other in bed. I end the day on a high note with a kiss and cuddle (and hopefully a few giggles) from my favorite person.

My daughter loves when we read non-fiction together. She loves to learn about things, especially science. Right now we are planning a trip to Disney World and she want me to read to her from my Disney guide books every day. It is exciting to see her discover one of the authentic purposes for reading-gaining information.

My children are 21 and 17 but we occasionally still read together. Most recently my 17 year old son read to me from Supreme Court transcripts regarding the case on video games. I read to our dear friend, Nina, age 5, whose first language is Macedonian. Her favorite lately was one of my daughter’s favorites, The Cottage at the End of the Lane by Elaine Mills.
Mama Meg
We love to read in the evenings right before bed. Both my boys pick five books each and we go back and forth with each one’s choices. Over Christmas break, my kindergartner started reading to ME! We all cuddle up and read through every choice. It’s the perfect ending to my day.

I’ve always been a big target fan too…. and this sounds like a wonderful program to encourage literacy! I’ve been writing children’s books for many years. Although I LOVE traditional books, I’m happy to announce that my book “Peterkin Meets A Star” was turned into an app for the iPone and iPad. It’s a “picture book” for very young readers. The words are highlighted as they are read aloud. You can find it on iTunes….

With my first one (2.5 yo) her favorite times are before bed and at the bathroom.
With my 2nd one (11mo) it is during mealtime since she does not let me feed her anyway.
One of our favorite is a classic: The Little Engine that Could, even the baby chugg along

We read over breakfast, which means there is a LOT of talking with our mouthful. But hey, it’s a guaranteed 20 focused minutes every day!

My two year old’s favorite book is anything with Thomas the Train or Curious George. We sit down and read right before bed time, which he always tries to drag out by adding more books. I have a deep love for reading, so I am really glad that he will be able to share that with me! I am also a nursing student and at night when I am trying to study, sometimes I read from my textbooks to him, just because he loves to sit and listen. We also carry books with us in our bag when we leave the house, just in case he gets anxious while we wait in line. I am very impressed with Target’s dedication to reading and I hope that that dedication passes on to others.

We are a bi-lingual family and I tried to read to my kids in our 2nd language as much as I can. One of my children has attention issues, so when i read it’s good excercise for me to stop after a page and ask question to see if he got all of it. When we read we bond. My kids don’t like bedtime, but if i read to them it’s a much easier transition.

My 2 yr old loves Karen Katz books!

Oh how much fun! I <3 Target and we love reading and I know we'd love an iPad! We have read with my son since he was a baby almost every day. He's now 7 and a very avid and advanced reader. It really makes all the difference in eduction if a child can read. We're trying to incorporate this same concept with our second child – a little harder when you lead a busy life. But we do try to read every night before bedtime with both children.

I love reading to my daughter because I feel I have her total undivided attention with her listening so intently. Bed time is always a must, but there are several other times in the day when we read together or I ask her to read to me. We visit our local library often & she always takes a book to preschool with her as if it’s a new toy.

!’ve read most of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book to my kids since they were too young to read . Each one had personal preferences, my son used to love “farmer boy stories” and my daughter always wanted to listen to Lauras’s adventures in the indian territory. Eventually they have read all books by themselves and these tales are part of our family’s memories and some have special meaning to us all.

My boys love books and we have read to them since infancy! My 3 year old is a Berenstein Bear and Curious George fanatic. It’s great because I can always pull out a Berenstein Bear lesson to apply it to our everyday life. Ex, when at the store “sounds like you’re getting the gimmies…” and that stops the behavior immediately! We read throughout the day and of course at night. My 3 year old will sit in bed for an hour just looking at books!

As a children’s librarian, I know the importance of reading to kids – I do it with my own kids and I can see the difference that it makes in kids that come to storytime or visit the library to pick out books. Libraries have wonderful resources for readers (or pre-readers) of all interests, levels, and ages. One of the favorite books I’m reading to my storytime kids right now is “Pete the Cat” by Eric Litwin.
Angie K.
My favorite time and place to read to my girls is right before bedtime. With my 6 year old I lay in her bed with her and we read a couple stories. With my almost 20 month old, I read to hear in a chair and she picks out the books and comes to me to sit on my lap to read. Precious moments.

With my almost-five-year-old, she’s into having chapter books read to her. Our favorites are the original Winne-the-Pooh stories; the Flat Stanley series; and the Amelia Bedelia series. With my three-year-old our very favorite book is Who’s Hiding by Satoru Onishi, followed closely by Chicka Chicka Boom and Tiki Tiki Tembo (she loves the beat!). My baby loves the touch-and-feel books. We always read before bedtime, and all weekend long.

My kids love to read. My son (5) is currently into poetry and non-fiction books about space. We fit in reading whenever we can. I see my daughter (2 1/2) “reading” a book to herself as she remembers the story and associates the pictures with key words. Every night we have family reading time, which we all look forward to. Instilling a love of reading is so important! It opens up an endless world of ideas:)

we love “And Tango makes two” by Justin Richardson. Its a true story about two make penguins who raise an egg. Its imperative that our children, who may be straight or gay themselves, who will most definitely have gay colleagues, friends and family members and will have friends with gay parents, grow up in a world where same sex relationships are unremarkable. This book carries that wonderful message in a simple and true tale.
I’d love an ipad. But though I love target very much I’m still angry at the anti gay marriage donation they made last year. I don’t understand why a company like Target supports bigotry. I hope that doesn’t disqualify me!
We read 4 stories (each of my two kids picks two) stories every night before bed. often we will read more, but that is sacrosanct. We play phonics games with letters too, and my 4 year old is staring to read. What I love is how both my kids (4 and 2) spend ages just sitting and looking at their books. They love books more than anything already, which gives me so much joy, being a bookworm myself.

My favorite children’s book is one that is no longer in print- The Snuggle Bunny. Best story ever about a little bunny who finds an old, lonely man to snuggle with. The best part are the illustrations- the book is from the late 60’s/early 70’s and there is a charming illustration of a hippie couple, complete with love beads and flowers in hair. 🙂

I have been a pre-k teacher, a early pre-school teacher, and a grandmother of four for 14 years, so I can honestly say I having been reading to children for most of my life. Reading books to a child is one of the best learning tools a teacher has to offer. Some of my kids I teach only have the opportunity to hear a book read to them at school, so I try to read to them as much as I possibly can.

Reading is a big thing in our family. My 6 year old is a voracious reader that she keeps piles of books in the bathroom to read. My favorite place to read to my babies is in my oldest daughter’s bed each night at bedtime. My 5 year old and 1 year old both lie beside me while I read them whichever story is chosen that night. I am not a parent just yet but I consider myself a parent to 32 1st grade students! I encourage my students to read basically all day. With my school located in a poverty stricken urban setting, many of my students do not have access to books once they leave school. My job as an educator is to provide them with the most I can to enhance their learning experience. I made each “chair pockets” out of denim fir the backs of their chairs to store books in, I subscribed to Time for Kids Magazine for them to learn about current events, and I try to stock my classroom library with entertaining books at their level. This year is quite challenging with so many students and just me in the classroom, but it’s all worth it when I witness their growth!

We have been reading at bedtime in my bed, my two-year-old will pick out books for us to read–for a while Goodnight Moon was a favorite, but now anything that has a horse in it will spark her interest.

Right now my little girl and I are reading the Little House on the Prairie books. It’s so fun seeing the stories I loved come alive to her for the first time as she discovers her very own adventures.
I think hers and my son’s favorite story will always be The Velveteen Rabbit.

What a great program, fantastic idea @target! We read to our daughter every night before bed. It’s a good way to wind down at the end of the day and the bonding experience cuddling up together with a favorite book is priceless!

I am a k teacher who LOVES reading Mo Willems books with my class. We have read all the Pigeon books including Don’t Let the Pigeon drive the bus! My class chanted NO WAY Jose! each time Pigeon had a diffferent reason for driving the bus. We had fun drawing our own pigeon in 10 easy steps from Mo Willems website.

My daughter is an avid reader. In the morning, she’ll read to herself for a 1/2 hour before waking up mommy.
Kristin
I love to read to my kids as often as we can – but our absolute, “nothing gets in the way” times are before rest time and before bed time. We love many different books, but our favorites are by Karma Wilson (Mr. Murray and Thumbkin) and Amy Hest (You can do it, Sam!).

Wow, great giveaway – and for what better cause than literacy! Thanks! As a teacher of reading, this is not to be missed.

I read with my six year old every evening. His favorite is The Story of Ferdinand. There are some evenings where we make it through six or seven books before he is satisfied. I find it especially rewarding at this age because he is beginning to read the books to me. 🙂

I love to read to my son at the library. Even though it can be noisy in the children’s area, he is usually so excited to see what books are waiting for him (I usually request books on-line) that his enthusiasm is catching. I try to take him there twice each week.
Love your blog!

We read constantly at home! Every night before bed my 3 year old son has a “playlist” of books he must read before going to sleep. One if his favorites is “Bears in the Night”. This morning while I was changing my infant daughter’s diaper, I overheard my son in his room reading the entire book by himself. Truly remarkable!
Trina
Thank you for hosting such a great giveaway. My boys and I already have a regular reading routine, but I took the pledge anyway. My seven-year-old’s favorite book right now is the Dragonbreath series by Ursula Vernon. My little one is enjoying The Wheels on the Bus, which is a mechanical/pop-up book.

I love the time my boys and I spend together reading before bedtime – right now we are flying through Tumtum & Nutmeg: The Rose Cottage Tales. The Mouse and the Motorcycle might be next to continue the mouse theme!

Our family loves to read everywhere we go.
Visiting a book store and library are some of our favorite things to do.
We have a large library at home which continues to grow and we keep books throughout our house, so they are always the first thing we pick up.
The Geronimo Stilton Series is a favorite in our house, especially when we make up voices for each character.
Melissa S.
I tweeted and FB’ed this, plus liked the site on FB. Thanks!

No way we could pick an absolute favorite book and no way to pick just one favorite place/time to read. We read all the time throughout the day. She reads while we are driving, while I’m making dinner; we cuddle up on the couch together, etc. We ALWAYS read at bedtime. My husband or I read a picture book and then she reads a story or two from her Bible.

One of my favorite kid’s book is “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” by Mo Willems. When I taught Kindergarten, this book was my students’ favorite and we would act it out in class. It soon became a favorite of my family as well especially my youngest son. To continue the tradition of this favorite book, I volunteer to read in many classrooms now especially on Dr. Seuss Day and this book is now one of those classroom favorites too.
As to a favorite place to read I would have to say anywhere and everywhere! When my youngest son was little, I use to let him put his sleeping bag in the tub and that became his favorite reading place. He would pull the curtain closed and spend time there reading all his books over and over and I would hear him pretending to be the characters in those books. I only wish I had gotten a recording of them!
I have posted this to Twitter, Facebook, and have subscribed via RSS. I have also shared this with my friend Susan and am following you on Twitter.

My favorite time to read to my students is after lunch, when everyone is full and ready to rest. I, also, like to finish the day reading a chapter of Junie B. Jones. My 5 year old nephew and I love to snuggle on the couch after school and read stories about pirates and treasure.

Reading is a big part of our family life. Even when other children come over for play dates, reading is a big part of who we are as a family. Each night, each child gets to pick 2-3 book. After bath time, we spend an hour reading. Sometimes we camp on the floor; sometimes we huddle on the couch. In the summer, we read outside. We use funny voices and act out parts.

Our third grader still struggles with reading so we make sure to read to her every night before bed so she has the experience of “falling into a story” without the struggle she experiences when she reads. Right now she’s in the middle of the Percy Jackson series. Her independent reading skills will improve with practice and time, and in the meantime we will have encouraged a delight of reading.

Some of our favorite books are Good Night Moon, Dr Suess, Velveteen Rabbit.. the Little House series (we read these a loud as a family), I recently read Have you Filled A Bucket Today by Carol McCloud with the older kids and we all loved the story and the meaning behind it (my 5 &6 year old talk about it ALL the time). As an English teacher, I know how important reading is, fundamentally. So whenever my four-year-old son wants to read a book, I leap at the chance. Though he cannot fall asleep without being read a book, and that may be his favorite time, my favorite time is whenever I see the eagerness in his eyes while asking me to read a book. I enjoy reading with my son any time he’ll sit still for it, but especially on Saturdays. On Saturday, I try to reduce or eliminate the use of most electronics in the house and replace it all with reading. Usually, while he’s eating breakfast or even when he’s just playing with toys in the living room. He loves to grab books and flip through them on his own (I think it’s because we spend so much time reading to him).

My favorite children’s book (right now) is most certainly “Ms. Nelson Is Missing.” I still chuckle at the end and my toddler gets a kick out of it. It is so important to foster that love of learning through reading.

Great blog! My twins are 5 and they just completed their 300th book this “school” year. They are still in preschool. We always make reading fun and they still look forward to that each night before bed. Our favorites right now are Princesses are not quitters, But, I’m an Aligator and Martha Says Sorry. We love books. Mama would LOVE an iPad so she can use it for more books and reading on the go. ; )

I have a three year old and a four month old. We read at least 4 books each night before we go to bed. I have my three year old “read” the books to me and the baby as well. The three year old also answer questions about the books we read. We do seem to read the same books regularly, even though we do have a large selection of books. I do need to take them to the library to choose their own books more often. I definately will make a point of doing this.

I have been reading to my son since the day I brought him home from the hospital. I would sit in the rocker, holding him reading all the great books given to me at my shower. Over time I have been crazied with buying books to read to him, he is now seven years of age. I just cleaned out all of his books and donated 4 boxes filled to his school for new teachers coming in, to help build there classroom libraries. The best part of our nightly reading was when he started to read to me! So amazing when they go thru that stage. He now reads on a end of third grade level and he is in 2nd grade. He goes to an amazing school district and has an amazing teacher that loves being a teacher. He has such a love for reading that I am so glad that all of these things are part of the “why”.
Lucy
I love your blog! Currently our favorite book is Belinda Begins Ballet by Amy Young. While we read whenever and wherever we can through out the day, the story time before the bed time is still the best! Lucy

I hope her younger brother will be that excited about books as well.

This entry is a little unconventional but I am a Social Worker for a wonderful boy named Jackson who was born with Cerebral Palsy. Although he has to deal with this significant disability that effects his body his mind is very sharp. He enjoys reading books independently but often has trouble turning the page. We think an iPad would be perfect for him as he has played around on them before (his friend has one) and he has the needed swiping motion down. 😉 His recent favorite book is The Great Gilly Hopkins, By Katherine Paterson and a classic The Giving Tree, By Shel Silverstein.

My children and I find many opportunities to read. We enjoy being able to be a pirate, big wolf, fish or baby monster anytime of the day. We can imagine, make our own noises and even create artwork after we read of how “we see it”…Reading is such a special time to share who we are (mommy and big brother books) and who we want to be (anything imaginable)…

We are a reading family! Each kid has their own bookcase in their room, all of them stuffed full of favorites. There is also a box on the floor for all the library and borrowed books. Every night before bed, each kid grabs a book to read on their own for at least 20 minutes. During that time, I sit with our 3-year old and read books with her. Right now she loves Sandra Boynton books and Pinkalicious. Once she is down, I curl up with my 7-year old to read out-loud. Currently, we are on book 8 of the 39 Clues series. And the whole family loves the Chronicles of Narnia. Our 10-year old started reading The Magician’s Nephew to his brother. We are thrilled that our love of books and reading was an easy thing to pass on!
