Friends, it’s time to stop talking and start doing.

No matter which political party you stand with, the gun violence in our country has gotten way out of hand. It’s time to really, truly do something.

But before I get all nuts about things, I must be clear: this is not about gun control; it’s about gun sense.

what can we do about gun control teachmama.com

I am by no means trying to take away anyone’s 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. That’s not my jam.

Rather, I’m advocating for better gun sense laws–laws designed to keep every person in every community safer.

Here’s the skinny. . .

What Can You Do About Gun Control? Start Here.

I’ve written about what you can do about this issue many times, most recently after the shooting in Orlando.

But this time seems different.

The momentum with which students in particular are moving and mobilizing amazes me. Inspires me. Excites me.

Here are a few things you can do right now.

I’m a part of Moms Demand Action here in Maryland, and their five steps are as follows:

Step 1:

pledge to vote

Take the pledge to vote for gun safety. You can do that here. Click the image below.

Step 2:

Follow the NRA (National Rifle Association) Money.

Put your information into the site and see how much money your representatives are taking from the NRA. Then, vote accordingly.

Step 3:

Register your friends to vote.

Get everyone you know to register so they’re ready for the next election. You can do this right on the Moms Demand Action website.

Click below.

Step 4:

Get the candidates on record. This year, Moms Demand Action is giving representatives who are Gun Sense Candidates a special ‘seal of approval’ that they can put on their sites and proudly promote.

Attend a local Moms Demand Action meeting so that you can find out how your representative votes on gun sense laws.

Step 5:

Run for office.

I know that I could never do it, but for others, it’s a surprise calling.

Moms Demand Action hosts monthly calls where the focus is support for those first-timers who are thinking about running for office.

If you’re ever going to do it, now’s the time!

These five steps are what Moms Demand Action recommends, but here are a few other things you may consider doing:

Tell your teacher friends to join forces.

Educators should text EDUCATORS to 64433.

Educators all over the world are joining forces and using their voices. It’s amazing. It’s hard and scary, but it’s about time.

Join the march.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the March for Our Lives on March 24, 2018, right?

Led by students who want to see change, this march on Washington will be like nothing before. Join us, either in town or in your own hometown.

I plan to take Maddy, Owen, and Cora because why not? What better way to see government in action than by a peaceful protest in our Nation’s Capital?

For more information on the March for Our Lives, visit https://www.marchforourlives.com/

Join the walkout on March 14, 2018.

This may not be of interest for every person, depending on where he or she lives, but most high schoolers will be walking out of the school building on March 14, 2018.

Under the umbrella of The Women’s March, this walkout is a youth-led movement, and they want others to be involved.

You can follow #Enough or #NationalSchoolWalkOut to learn more, or visit the website: https://www.womensmarch.com/enough/

Talk about tough topics.

It’s not easy, friends, but it must be done. Any time we want change, we have to muster up the courage to talk about it.

And that’s sometimes super scary.

But no matter whether you are spending time with other adults at playgroups, bookclubs, PTA or PTO meetings, or conference calls, we must be willing to talk about difficult topics like gun sense laws.

Spread the word.

No matter what platform you are on, it’s time to spread the word, friends.

Like, favorite, re-tweet, re-gram, share, pin, post, whatever it is you do, DO IT with gun sense related posts.

Follow your favorite hashtags, your favorite accounts, and please don’t be afraid to follow and share.

Just do something, friends. Do something.

Hello, Teacher Wish List.

You are welcome here. In fact, we are incredibly glad that you’ve made your way into our culture.

You’re like the Wedding Registry or Baby Registry–but better.

You are a dream because you are the list that gives and gives and gives. You’re not full of weird kitchen appliances or ugly China patterns or tiny baby Air Jordans. You are made of books, pens, pencils, journals, math manipulatives, bulletin board letters, lab goggles, staplers, and hole punchers.

You are helping to equip and educate the youth of the world and are taking a tiny bit of stress off of the shoulders of our educators. And we all know that our educators–especially in the last few years–have been stretched to the absolute max. They are tired, worn down, and stepped on. They’re pushed and pulled every which way and are expected to do the job of 27 different people.

What an amazing thing you are, you little Classroom Wish List! Just a simple Amazon Wish List, you let us all feel like we are helping in a teeny way, and we thank you.

We hope you never, ever leave and that you’re here to stay.

Sincerely,

Everyone

Friends, if you have an extra $5 or $10 that you could spare to help some amazing educators, we would be SO GRATEFUL.

Head on over to find out what I'm talking about and to learn how you can help.

And? If you're a teacher, add YOUR list to the mix so it gets more eyes (and more support!)
