Itโ€™s that time of year when hearts and love and pink and hugs and candy and kisses are in the air.

homemade bookmark valentines cover

So the kids and I have been busy making Valentines for their classmatesโ€”one of our favorite holiday traditions.

This year, with the help of Melissa & Dougโ€™s Scratch Art Bookmarks, our homemade Valentines stepped up a few notches on the cool meter. ย ย Actually, theyโ€™re so cool and Maddy, Owen, and Cora are so excited to share them with their buddies, that these homemade Scratch Art Bookmark Valentines may actually be off of the cool meter.

They were quick and easy to make which is a plus when youโ€™re working with a 9, 7, and 5 year old, but theyโ€™re still totally and completely cute.

Anyone can make them.ย  And all kids will love โ€˜em.

And there’s no glue involved. (Hey, that’s a plus for some families. . .)

Hereโ€™s the skinny. . .

Homemade Scratch Art Bookmark Valentines:

Scratch Art meets bookmarks meets Valentine’s Day. So fun.homemade bookmark valentines supplies

Our supplies are ready to go–hole punch, Valentine cards, and scissors!

Scratch Art Bookmarks are simply bookmarks that appear plain-Jane black and boring. But with the help of a teeny, little scratch stick, you can ‘scratch’ designs–letters, words, shapes, scenes, you name it–and the images appear in a fun ‘hidden’ rainbow pattern.

It’s the same Scratch Art material that we used for Maddy’s Golden Birthday goodie bags back in December, but we used key chains, fashion dolls, and bracelets.

For our Bookmark Valentines, we used the Scratch Art Bookmark Party Pack which includes 12 bookmarks, 12 scratching sticks, and 12 ribbons for the bookmark.

What took the longest was creating the actual card part; though I knew we were going to rock it out with the Scratch Artยฎ Bookmarks, I wasnโ€™t sure how we were going to incorporate the bookmark and the card part.ย  But I played around with sizes, with folds, with where to put the stick and where the kids could sign the cards, and I think we nailed it.

I created the Bookmark Valentines 2013 sheet, and then I printed it out on brightly-colored cardstock, about 65lb.ย  There are four cards on each sheet, and the document has three pages of cards for a total of 12 cards each.

The Bookmark Valentines can be printed after throwing your email in the box below:

I have no idea how many total I printed, but definitely enough to cover Maddy, Owen, and Coraโ€™s classes.

After the cards were cut, the kids folded them in half.ย  It was easiest for them to figure out where to sign them once the cards were folded.

Maddy, Owen, and Cora each added a Valentineโ€™s-type stampโ€”hearts, โ€˜LOVEโ€™, flowers, and the likeโ€”and then they signed their names.

Next we added a fancy ribbon to the Scratch Art bookmark. The set comes with shiny red ribbons, but we mixed it up a bit and added some festive ribbons we had here at homeโ€”gold, white, pink, silver, and dotted.

While the kids were busy stamping and signing the cards and stringing their bookmarks, I was flexing my muscles with the hole-punch.

I created the Valentine cards with two tiny โ€˜Xโ€™sโ€™ on the front of each card. These were for me so I knew where to punch the holes.ย  Once holes were punched, the kids threaded the stick through, and the we were finished!

Miraculously, once the scratch stick was through the holes, the card stayed shut and the bookmark was safe.ย  So. Totally. Cute!ย  And so. Totally. Functional. No tape, no glue. Schweet!

So over several days, we cut, stamped, signed, threaded, punched, and sorted Valentines.ย  And while we worked, we chatted, laughed, and worked together to โ€˜tweakโ€™ our process so that everyone was comfortable with what they were doing.

And we were all pretty positive that these Scratch Art Bookmark Valentines would be a huge hit for their classmates and teachers!ย  Such a fun way of celebrating our our kids’ love of reading with a Valentine treat that didnโ€™t involve sweets!

So there you have it, another year of homemade Valentines made simply–but with a whole lot of love.

Happy Valentine-making, friends!

I am trying to print off the labels but it keeps needing me to sign in on FB or put email…..I really hesitate doing this to things I don’t know about. Why can I not just print it easily????? I may be creative with the kids on things, but literate at computer stuff sometimes I am not:-)

My favorite little spot to lay out the mat = โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿงœ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Use an emoji to tell me yours.

remember: it doesnโ€™t matter what you do as long as you move your body in some way each day. Total game changer. Promise.

For me, walking the ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿถ and ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธare daily non-negotiables for my physical AND mental health.

I do the @melissawoodhealth videos each day, and her upbeat, casual attitude, variety of low-impact strengthening workouts, and reminders to just keep coming back are key.

This book is SO different from any other I have read in the recent past, and itโ€™s something that is both refreshing and hopeful.

My friend @techninjatodd wanted to put out a book that would be a source of hope, a reminder that we are not alone. A testament to the fact that every season of life matters.

And so, In This Season: Words From the Heart was born, with help from the amazing @apron_education @allylee21 @writtentospeak @omar2764

โ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธ

Life is full of seasons.

Each of us has endured the cold of winter, the growth of spring, the light of summer, and the change of fall. Weโ€™ve climbed to the mountaintops and been deep in the valley.

In This Season: Words for the Heart takes the emotions we feel deep within and puts them into words. The pages of this book invite you to reflect and lean in as you continue through season after season.

๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ

Check this book out, friends. It is worth your time, and it is the perfect book for busy educators to pick up, read a few pages over a quick cup of coffee before the day begins or as you kick up your feet at the end of the day.

It feels like a quiet conversation with a close friend or dear colleague. Important topics are touched on which remind us that our feelings and thoughts and insecurities are often not as unusual as we may think. Rather, these ups and downs of life are a shared experience that couldโ€”and should!โ€”be shared more frequently and openly. The reminder that we are not alone could not come at a more pivotal time for all of us; in the past two years, we have been reminded that life is short but that seasons change. Letโ€™s make the most of what we have!

Thank you, Todd, LaNesha, Tanner, and Alice for starting this conversation.
